When I was in a small village in Michoacan for Day of the Dead, I ran across a sugar skull vendor selling from a rickety wooden table under the arches of the town square. He had just brought in a new batch of his famous sugar Guadalupes, and women were clamoring to buy them for their ofrendas! It would make a very special offering for their departed loved ones. They were iced with green frosting for the Virgin’s cape, golden yellow flames of the resplandor, and little gold stars stuck into the icing of the cape. They were true works of folk art! I bought some of these boiled sugar gems and never saw them again.
Guadalupe is SO iconic that I really wanted this in my sugar skull mold collection - Carolyn and I sculpted this in 2 pieces which makes it fully round… It’s made with the same sugar skull, meringue mixture as the sugar skulls. Dry the back and front and put together with Royal Icing before decorating. The Virgin stands 8″ high. The body is easy to make but the decorating is an advanced project. Magnify the photos below and yes, we sell the tiny flowers that you see on the back side.
KIT - We also have a Guadalupe KIT which includes all the decorating supplies.
The bottom 3 photos of the most exquisite decorating, was done by our beloved customer, Erin Crociani.
