Atzompa Village Mama - This pottery figurine is a traditional style made famous by Teadora Blanca Nunez who's delightful depictions of village women who are in charge of a myriad of jobs - taking care of children, selling in the mercado, taking care of livestock and all the cooking! This style of unglazed pottery. where the textural flowers and leaves are pressed onto the skirt fabric, is called "applique". Usually, the more animals and attachments make a piece more valuable. Some of these women figurines are up to 4 feet tall!
When I was doing wholesale work (in the 1980's and 1990's) and selling at Gift Show trade shows around the US, I sold a lot of pottery for movie sets, designers & restaurants. I sold 8 of these Atzompa women that were 4 feet tall to Disney! This is a very good small piece to start your collection with - no signs of repairs or breakage.
