Unless you want naked white skulls, you'll need supplies to decorate your sugar skull blanks!

  • Meringue powder for Royal Icing
  • Paste food colors
  • Disposable icing bags
  • Colored tin foil
  • Sugar skull boats
  • Powdered sugar - from grocery store

Rule of thumb: 1 batch Royal Icing is needed per dozen skulls. (This will require a 2 pound bag of powdered sugar from the grocery and 1/2 cup meringue powder from us.

Once white icing is mixed with food coloring, a batch should be split into 12 disposable icing bags with a small amount of icing in each. Usually, 6 paste food colors is enough for any project - and white! An 8 oz meringue powder is enough to make 4 batches icing.

We cannot accept an order for less than 24 Medium Sugar Skull Blanks at this time.

NEW Big Eyes Sugar Skull Mold™ - New for 2017!

This 2-piece mold makes 1 extra large sugar skull. This is the largest, most realistic Mexican sugar skull mold we have.

It's whimsical with the big eye recesses to decorate and it's a big skull with lots of room to decorate. Carolyn Potter and I had lots of fun making this mold!

Big Eyes Sugar Skull Mold from for Day of the Dead
more details
Eyes can be accentuated with colored tin foils, colorful Royal Icing, rhinestones and even round cut outs from soup labels. Anything that looks striking. In Mexico, the sugar skull makers use whatever they find to make a sugar skull special.

The reason this mold is so special and has been long requested is because the back of the head is exactly the same size as the front. This means the skull sits up straight and does not recline, which is preferable to some people. For chocolate makers who wanted a big skull to make hollow chocolate sugar skulls, this is perfect. They would still need to clamp the 2 plastic molds together, but it doesn't have a smaller back of the head as the Original Large has. This skull is fun to make and in size, falls between the Original Large & Oaxacan XL mold. It's very important to use our strong CK Products meringue powder and scoop to 1/4" - 1/3" walls before assembly. Please send us photos of your Big Eyes skull decoration and we'll try to post them.

Original Large Sugar Skull Mold™

(face & back)
Makes an impressive sugar skull! Little children have success decorating this large-scale skull & adults have lots of space for elaborate decoration. This skull is the size of a big grapefruit and weighs about a pound. Best for pre-3rd grade students (with developing dexterity skills) but it takes much longer to make these blanks than the Original Medium. These large skulls recline and look good on ofrendas. Scooping is necessary.

Original Medium Sugar Skull Mold™

(1 piece, 2 cavities) flat back -
Our most popular sugar skull mold!
When you need to make large quantities of sugar skulls for school or parties, this is the best choice - 10 pound bag of sugar yields 44 tangerine size skulls. Fastest & easiest to make. Ample space for decorating on the large head. Big enough to use colored tin foil on eyes, mouth and a rectangle on the forehead. Best for 3rd grade to adult. No scooping required.

W3501 $9.50

Oaxaca Medium Sugar Skull Mold™

2 faces & 2 backs
This cute 2-sided sugar skull stands up so decoration can wrap all the way around the skull. It takes a bit longer to make than Original Mediums since you have to make backs, fronts and glue them together with Royal Icing before you can decorate. These are about the size of a small apple but totally 3D round compared to the Original Medium. 10 pound bag of sugar yields 32 of these skulls. Best for families & small parties. Scooping optional.

NEW Altar Sugar Skull Molds™

2-piece molds for sugar skull mix, tempered chocolate, candy coating wafers or colored ice!

Lots of decorated Altar Sugar Skulls from

So many customers have called us over the years asking for a smaller sugar skulls with both front and back. Well, ta-dah! We have three new sugar skull molds that are based on real sugar skulls from Oaxaca, Mexico. Sugar Skulls to top cakes & cupcakes!

These molds will delight the experienced sugar skull maker. Since the front and back of the skull are the same size, the finished skull appears to be more like the authentic Mexican sugar skulls. All of these skulls are too small a scale for little children to have success with, but but are wonderful for older kids and adults. The tiny 1" skull is best for experienced sugar & chocolate makers. Chocolate makers will have fun attempting HOLLOW chocolate sugar skulls by clamping the back & front together.

NEW Medium Altar Sugar Skull Mold™

(face & back)
Kathi says the size of this skull is between a loquat & a guyabano! This makes a skull a bit smaller than a tennis ball. Back and front are exactly the same size so once it's decorated, it looks very similar to a true Mexican sugar skull. Petite! Nice size to mound up on top of a cake, or give as a gift.

NEW Small Altar Sugar Skull Mold™

(face & back)
This precious little skull is the size of a large walnut or Barbie doll head. Too difficult for a student to decorate. Cake decorators with small tips will enjoy making these sugar skulls to top cupcakes, use as party favors or 2-bite chocolates. This adorable size is great to decorate or personalize for "angelito" baby ofrendas. Ribbon can be sandwiched between the two skull pieces during assembly to make Christmas tree ornaments!

W3310 $9.50

NEW Mini Altar Sugar Skull Mold™

(face & back)
Only if you really, really love someone would you choose this mini sugar skull mold! It's a bitch to make as it's the size of an acorn or marble. If you are enticed to make these, you will treasure them! They are precious, especially if you put gold tin foil eyes and a strip across the head. You'll have to use tiny holes in your icing bags. They remind me of the exquisite miniature Oaxacan folk art sugar skull makers who sell in the outdoor markets before Day of the Dead. This tiny size would be used on baby altars or gifted between friends at the bistro table while sharing shots in the zócolo.

Oaxaca X-Large Sugar Skull Mold™

face & back
This 1.5 pound skull is best for adult ofrenda makers as it's a bit large to grip. This skull will sit majestically on your ofrenda to welcome your muertos back. Lots of fun to decorate. I've used it as a birthday cake with candles stuck into little mounds of Royal Icing. Artists can hollow it out and poke out the eyes to make panoramic scenes inside the head. This skull gives you lots of real estate to decorate. Scooping is a must.

W3480 $13

NEW Oaxaca Small Sugar Skull Mold™

(face & back)
These small Oaxaca sugar skulls recline perfectly to look good on an ofrenda. They have the same look as all the Oaxaca line - about the size of the Altar 2 1/2 " skull, but instead of looking straight forward, this one reclines. The front is slightly longer than the back of the head. Probably not a good choice for students (Original Medium is BEST) but great for sugar skull makers who want to make lots of little skulls as give-aways, decorate tops of cakes or place setting gifts. Very happy friendly looking skull design.

Virgin of Guadalupe Sugar Mold™

Last year, when I was in Michoacan for Day of the Dead, I ran across a sugar skull vendor selling from a rickety wooden table under the arches of the town square. He had just brought in a new batch of his famous sugar Guadalupes, and women were clamoring to buy them for their ofrendas! It would make a very special offering for their departed loved ones. They were iced with green frosting for the Virgin's cape, golden yellow flames of the resplandor, and little gold "teacher stars" stuck into the icing of the cape. They were true works of folk art! We have tried to make a similar Guadalupe mold this year for your enjoyment... for those of you who can't go to Patzcuaro to get the real thing. It's made with the same sugar skull, meringue mixture as the sugar skulls. Dry the back and front and put together with Royal Icing before decorating. The Virgin stands 8" high.

Colored foil

4" x 4", 125 sheets

Colored foil makes the sugar skulls look traditionally Mexican! It's pasted down with the icing. Use the foil to make the rectangle on the forehead - when you buy sugar skulls in Mexico, the seller will write the name of the person you are honoring with icing there. You can use the colored tin foils sculpturally, making earrings, cigars, flowered hats, eyeglasses and such to personalize your sugar skulls. The shimmery colored foils make great eyes! If you are making chocolates, the pieces can be covered in a foil square, like a cherry cordial, to make it festive.

Day of the Dead Cello Treat Bags

Eureka! I finally found them. I've hunted for Day of the Dead images for years in party shops, dollar stores, big box seasonal aisles, cake decorating shops... We Día de los Muertos folks need these to package up our decorated sugar skulls and chocolates made from our molds. We need them to hold our hand made gifts. These bags aren't cheap, but they are truly Day of the Dead images - sugar skulls, Catrina and a crazy skeleton dancing in the cemetery. The good thing is that the bags are big - 6" x 11", no gusset.
